The Mets-Dodgers series this week has been eventful. Yesterday Clayton Kershaw notched win number 209 for his career. Today fellow future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer got ejected for having a sticky glove.
How did this come about? Well, after the game, he said his hand was “clumpy” from sweat and rosin in the second inning. He was told by home plate ump Phil Cuzzi to was it off—Scherzer says he did so with rubbing alcohol in front of an MLB official. In the third, he was told the glove was sticky and to change gloves, so he did. When he came out for the fourth, the ump checked his glove (the second one), found it to be sticky and promptly gave Scherzer the heave-ho. Scherzer could be heard shouting “It’s rosin!”
“I’d have to be an absolute idiot to try to do anything when I’m coming back out for the fourth [inning]… He said my hand is too sticky, and I said, ‘I swear on my kids’ life that I’m not using anything else. This is sweat and rosin, sweat and rosin.’
He’s right, he’d have to be an idiot after all that. Now, if it happens that he is indeed an idiot, and the glove is sticky for some reason other than sweat and rosin, then he will face a 10 game suspension.
Update: MLB has indeed now suspended Max Scherzer for 10 games. He’s appealing.
