Entering the season, the Brewers had made the playoffs for four straight seasons, as division champs in 2018 and 2021 and wild cards in 2019 and 2020. That streak ended this year. They still had a winning record, 86-76. They had 5 games in October, all at home, went 2-3 and found themselves eliminated as of Oct 3. Perhaps they might have squeaked into the playoffs instead of the Phillies if they had not traded closer Josh Hader away at the deadline. Overall they were 12th in team ERA and 10th in team OPS.
The Brewers primary free agent is Andrew McCutchen. A few years ago that would have been a huge deal, but he was only good for 1.1 WAR this year. They’ve already lost the aforementioned Josh Hader, as well as Jace Peterson and Brad Boxberger. They’ve traded for Jesse Winker—but gave up Kolten Wong to get him. They’ve traded for catcher William Contreras. Overall, I really don’t understand what they’re doing to try to get better again.
