Albert Pujols’ Good Day

This is expected to be Albert Pujols’ last season. The Cardinals signed him to a one-year deal and have been platooning him to hit against primarily left-handed pitchers. It has worked out every bit as well as could reasonably be hoped for by them. He has 1.0 WAR in 70 games, putting his career total back above 100 (100.6) with a .269 batting average. The other day he hit a grand slam. The Cardinals lead their division by 4.5 games.

Yesterday, however, he really had a good day. He went 4-4. He hit 2 home runs. His career total is now 692, putting him within 4 of catching Alex Rodriguez for 4th on the all time list. The 10 total bases yesterday moved him past Stan Musial into second place all time (he now has 6143 total bases to Musial’s 6134). The all time record holder—Hank Aaron of course—has 6856, so that will not be touched…but still, #2 all time is amazing.

Cap tip to one of the all time greats.
