It was a College World Series between two unseeded teams. In baseball only the top 16 teams, the teams that host a regional in the NCAA tournament are seeded. If it were basketball, Oklahoma and Ole Miss would have been 8 or 9 seeds in their respective regions. A final in basketball between teams seeded that low has happened…never. One would have thought the two teams fairly even, but Oklahoma was anointed the favorite in the best of three final series. So, of course, in this tournament in which all favorites were doomed, Ole Miss won two straight, 10-3 on Saturday and 4-2 on Sunday. They scored 3 to take the lead (and win) in the bottom of the 8 today to clinch the title.
Oklahoma was trying to become the first school to simultaneously have both the men’s and women’s college bat/ball champs. It would also have been their third baseball championship (1994, 1951). It was not to be.
Instead, Ole Miss has their first championship. During the season, it was reported that head coach Mike Bianco was on the hot seat in his 22nd year at the school, and one year after despised rival Mississippi State had won the CWS. Pretty clearly, that seat is now cool.
