April is over. Because of the late start to the season/shortened spring training, rosters were expended to 28 players instead of 26. Now that April is over, the rosters returned to 26 players. In most cases, the extra players are ones with options and are thus returned to the minors. There was one notable exception: Robinson Cano.
A very productive player through 2020, he didn’t play at all last year—he had to serve a 162 game suspension after testing positive for stanozolol, a synthetic anabolic steroid. This year he has hit .195 and been worth -0.5 WAR. He is still owed $44M over the remainder of this season and next. He still wants to play and reportedly was popular in the Mets clubhouse, so some team might take a cheap flyer on him. Maybe. It’s also possible the 39-year-old is never going to be a productive player again.
