My first reaction when I saw Ryan Braun’s retirement announcement was ”Didn’t he do that last year?” Turns out, no, he hadn’t. The Brewers didn’t give him a new contract/let him walk last October…and nobody else did either…but he never declared himself retired until today. In short, MLB had retired him, and now he has made it official.
Braun was once on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He was a 2007 Rookie of the Year and 2011 MVP. Then he avoided one PED suspension due to a technicality, and in the minds of most, threw a low level worker under a bus. Then came Biogenesis, and his legacy is inextricably tied to scandal. I doubt he even gets the 5% of the vote to stay on the Hall ballot past the first year.
Do you have to tire first before you can retire?
