Bad Week for the Yankees

Odd. You know how the iPhone puts up word suggestions as you type? As I was typing the title to this post, one of the three suggested words to follow “the” was “Yankees.” The phone knows.

A couple weeks ago those Yankees were riding a 13 game winning streak, mostly against losing teams. Since it ended, they’ve gone 2-9 and are currently on a 5 game losing streak. The last 4 were a sweep at the hand of the Blue Jays in a series in which they never even held a lead—something that had not happened to them since the Washington Senators did it to them in a four game series in 1924.

To make matters worse, the injury bug has hit their pitching staff. Gerrit Cole strained a hamstring; it’s not thought to be serious, but… They can be nagging and alter mechanics, so we will have to watch and see. Jameson Taillon has a second degree ankle sprain and is now on the IL for the next 10 days at least. Zach Britton just underwent TJS. He’s gone until 2023 at soonest after having last pitched Aug 19. He’s 32 and hasn’t been pitching that well, so it’s fair to wonder if that might be it for him as a big leaguer.

With the Blue Jays sweep, the Yankees are also now in the #2 Wild Card spot just behind the Red Sox and just a half game ahead of those Jays. Any further slipping and they won’t be in playoff position.

The Yankees start a weekend subway series against the Mets. The Mets have had their own problems, so one set of fans or the other will have there hand-wringing increased even more by the end of the weekend.
