Starting Marte an Oakland A

Starling Marte, long rumored to be going to the Yankees was instead traded by the Marlins to the A’s today. The centerfielder has been hitting.306 and playing plus defense. In return the Marlins get lefty pitcher Jesus Luzardo, who has struggled this season, posting an ERA north of 6.5. The Marlins are paying all of Marte’s remaining salary this year; he is a free agent at the end of the season. Luzardo is still only 23 and not eligible for free agency until 2027. Obviously the Marlins like the cost control and still see upside in him.

Also a free agent in 2027: the Rays franchise. Their 30-year, no escape clause contract with St Petersburg ends at the end of that season.
