Sultan Swats 700th

July 3, 1934:  Babe Ruth became the first player ever to hit 700 career home run.  It was a 2-run shot to right field off Tigers  starter Tommy Bridges in the third inning.  It put the Yankees up 2-0, and they went on to win 4-2.  At the time, the second most career home runs was 328 by Lou Gehrig, less than half Ruth’s total.  Ruth was also the first to 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 home runs.  He was the first to hit 30, 40, 50, and 60 home runs in a season too.

Speaking of Gehrig, he left the game in the second inning with back spasms.  The next day his games played streak stayed alive, barely, as his back was still hurting.  He officially started at shortstop, was the lead off hitter, took the plate appearance, then sat out the rest of the game.
