It was inevitable. The Summer Olympics are being put off until sometime next year. Canada and Australia had already announced they would not send teams unless the games were postponed. Several other countries, including the US, called for postponement as well albeit without declaring a boycott should said delay not occur. Besides the obvious health concerns, multiple groups also mentioned the need for athletes to train now and yet being unable to do so.
This ends, for this year, one other opportunity to watch baseball. There weren’t going to be current major league players in the Olympic tournament, of course, since it was going to be in July. There probably won’t be any in the rescheduled games next year either—they haven’t said when those games will occur, but anytime they might happen will still conflict with the MLB season.
The WBC is also supposed to occur in March next year.
“Canada and Australia had already announced they would not send teams unless the games were postponed.” Um…I find myself still processing that one….
