WHO YA GOT: NL Wild Card Edition

The National League Wild Card game is this evening. The 89-73 Brewers face the 93-69 Nationals. Pitching matchups are Brandon Woodruff vs Max Scherzer. Notable names in the series are Anthony Rendon, Mike Moustakas, Juan Soto, and Josh Hader. I know what it looks like on paper, but what says you?

  1. I think I’m just going to root in each series for the team with the lowest payroll. With my jinx now firmly in place, y’all might want to go out and put money on a Trolley Dodgers vs Highlanders World Series.

    • My money’s down. I can’t call the series winner but I think those are the teams we’re fated to watch. Hot note: popped sorghum is lighter, tastier and more nutritious than popcorn, and very easy to make in a covered frying pan.

    • The Brewers starter has an ERA a little under one run higher than Scherzers and the Nats have a better won loss record than the Brewers, who, looking at their run differential are a 500 team, but the Brewer’s starter has a better won loss record than Scherzer. Baseball.

I’ll root root root for the home team, but if the Brewers win it will be fun to watch them try and ruin the Dodger’s season. Every playoff can use a Cinderella.

    • Wow. Just wow. After three separate instances of watching the Nats blow a lead in an elimination game at home, the shoe ended up on the other foot last night, and SomeDaughterInVA2.0 and I couldn’t have been happier.

I’m not sure I agree with the sentiment, but the Nats doused themselves in champagne after the game, which tells me that they’re treating this win as a series win, so they’re gonna claim they got that monkey off their back.

On to face L.A., a team that they went 3-4 against this year, getting outscored 30-28 in the process, if memory serves. Not saying the Nats will beat the Dodgers, but I definitely believe that they can beat the Dodgers.

      • One game is not a series, but if they want to celebrate a postseason win, that’s cool.

Hader was so fried last night; he obviously has probably shutting it down at Nats Park. See also the ASG.

Stras was the man. I give him all the props.

        • Davey got away with two mistakes last night:

          • Starting Scherzer over Strasburg
          • Letting Scherzer hit in the 3rd instead of removing him

I love me some Max, but he hasn’t been MAX since the All-Star Break. Max gutted out five innings (and Soto briefly reverting to his 2018 defensive form on the Thames double in the fourth was nearly a disaster) but Strasburg is better this year.

Nats’ rotation for the NLDS will be Corbin, Sanchez, Strasburg, Scherzer, Corbin, I guess; that’s how I’d line them up to have the chance to use Stras in relief in Game 5 if it gets that far.
