With a single to left field off Nexen Heroes starter Choi Won-tae in the top of the 5th inning in tonight’s game at Gocheok Skydome, Kim Tae-kyun (1B for the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization) has now set a new Asian record for getting on-base with his 70th consecutive game, beating Ichiro Suzuki’s former on-base record of 69 consecutive games, a record which stood since year 1994 during his time with the Orix Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball.
With Ichiro’s former Asian record out of the picture, Kim Tae-kyun now has his eyes set on Boston Red Sox legend Ted Williams’ Major league on-base record of 84 consecutive games played set in year 1949.
The 34 year old Kim Tae-kyun is currently hitting .407/.505/.605 with 4 homeruns and 18 RBIs in 23 games played so far this season. Kim also played with the Chiba Lotte Marines in NPB from year 2010 to 2011 after re-signing with the Hanwha Eagles back in 2012.
Until I saw this post I had never thought about consecutive on base games. Like most I focused on things like DiMaggio’s hitting streak, although we know that on base percentage is a better measure of a players value than batting average. That makes the consecutive on base game streak more important that the consecutive game hit streak.
I hope we’ll be fortunate enough to see a post from you letting us know that Kim Tae-kyun has broken William’s record.
