For the next few days, I have to post on my phone, which makes things a bit wonky. I’d like to talk about some baseball related stuff, but boy oh boy, am I tired. And it’s a pain to peck out a post on a phone.
So, it’s a music post tonight!
Lately, I have been listening to two vastly different types of music, from two incredibly different bands/artists. I get made fun of at work. “Prof listens to the most depressing music, don’t go into her office!” Which isn’t necessarily fair; only one is the most depressing.
Anyway, I have become a big fan of Passenger. His voice is odd, to be sure, and he looks like the Lucky Charms leprechaun on a bender, but there is something very peaceful, beautiful, and soothing about his music. This song in particular is lovely.
On the other end of the spectrum is noted influential New Wave band, Joy Division.
Normally, my favorite “I hate the world and everything sucks” music of choice is Morrissey. I’ve spent plenty of years, and these last few months included, listening to such uplifting fare as “My Life is an Endless Succession of People Saying Goodbye” and “I Have Forgiven Jesus”, but lately it just isn’t dark enough. I mean, beautifully, subversively dark. And while listening to Passenger do a rather slow and folky cover of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” I remembered that Joy Division was exactly what I needed.
It sounds counterintuitive to listen to this dark, sad, bleak music when you feel so terrible, but I can’t tell you how much better I feel.
Is there anything that you listen to during hard times that make you feel better, or at least make you feel like you aren’t alone in your misery? Leave a comment or better yet a video down below.
My “I hate the world and everything sucks” music is often Anaal Nathrakh or Nails. But lyrically it’s been NIN’s “Wish” or “Gave Up”. Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” is the most god damned depressing song I’ve ever heard.
Apparently I have a lot of songs about hating the world :P.
I’ll post the Anaal Nathrakh and the Nails because the others are more popular.

WOW! I don’t know if those are depressive um, tunes, but I was about to crash and now I think I’ll be up for a while.
It may be controversial, but when depressed I prefer peppy stuff like C&C Music Factory “Gonna Make You Sweat”. Songs like that force me out of my chair to dance (admittedly quite poorly, but still). I only visit here via iPhone and I have no idea how to add a link here, but look it up on the net. You CANNOT be depressed while listening.

Nails and Anaal Nathrakh sit firmly in the “I hate the world” section, where NIN can be both depending on the song.

Listen to both of Cash’s last two albums — my God. I got one for my step-dad thinking he’d relate to some of the old-timer stuff and he told me later it was depressing as he’ll. Maybe that doesn’t work the same if you’re younger though….

Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is the best. Because he lived it!

NIN works well for me, whenever I’m in a “want to watch the world burn” mood, I slip in And All That Could Have Been DVD and –if I remember– take down the more vulnerable paintings and potted plants before cranking the amp up to somebody call the cops.
Also, Jupiter, or When Your Heart Stops (YT videos are just audio so )

I love Trent Reznor. He’s another person who knows what it feels like to burn in misery. As far as albums go, between both of Joy Division’s works, and Viva Hate by Morrissey, probably the one I listen to the most is Pretty Hate Machine. Man, what a masterpiece.
