Chunichi Dragons adds two Cuban players to Ikusei deal

The Chunichi Dragons have acquired outfielder Leonardo Urgelles (Isla de la Juventud), 24, and pitcher Raidel Martinez (Vegueros de Pinar del Rio), 20, today on Ikusei contracts, both players are born in Cuba. The announced contract for both players are worth an estimated 10 million Yen (89,000 USD in annual salary), and are slated to join the Chunichi Dragons team after the World Baseball Classic, according to the report.

Leonardo Urgelles will wear the uniform number 210, while Raidel Martinez will wear the uniform number 211.

Ikusei contracts are mostly just for development, and the two are expected to open up their season in the organization’s farm system. They won’t be included in the active roster for the start of the season, unless some injuries pile up for the team’s foreign player list.
