Like my Spanish, the Tigers “new” FO sucks.
I’d like to have hope. I so wanted the rebuild to be one of those blow-your-socks-off makeovers where they turn shizz into shiplap on-time and at budget. But, every time Al Avila opens his mouth, it becomes more and more apparent that this is DD-lite at work.
Why he bothered with a new analytics department, I’m sure I don’t know, because I keep seeing headlines like this:
YES, THAT ACTUALLY SAYS WE ARE GOING TO USE INTERNAL OPTIONS FOR THE BULLPEN NEXT YEAR!!!!!
Clearly, the solution to our suckhole of a BP is to double-down on the BP. I mean, when their best projection for bolstering the pen is literally a younger version of Al Alburquerque… KILL. ME. NOW!!!
At least Avila is honest about past mistakes. He admits:
“When we bring him up, we want to make sure that he’s coming up to have success. We don’t want to go through the same mistake we did with Bruce in the past, where it just didn’t work out right away. We want to be a little bit more cautious with Jimenez.”
He’s talking about Joe Jimenez there — our designated future closer. On the one hand, I’m glad they recognize that Bruce Rondon needed more nurturing and they moved him up too fast, but learning from that mistake means Jimenez won’t be in the BP for awhile yet. Same with JaCoby Jones in the outfield, per other reports. So, basically, 2017 is going to be a retread of 2016 but maybe without JD Martinez or Ian Kinsler — whichever necessary piece the guys upstairs decide to cut to spite our team.
