The Midnight Snack – Something Wilder

The Snack will be sporadic for the next couple of weeks, as I have to finish up packing and some other stuff going on for my upcoming move across the country. The morning recaps are much more important, but I will do my best to do a Snack every night if possible.

We lost a comic master today. Gene Wilder was really something else; a guy who had so many iconic performances. Of course, most people my age think of him as Willy Wonka – the ultimate Wonka, honestly. One of my mantras in life is the song “Pure Imagination” from the film.

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Want to change the world?
There’s nothing to it

As a kid whose imagination kept her from a lot of dark places in life, this song was very important to me. We’ve had so many great ones die this year, and it’s overwhelming. All were very sad to me for one reason or another. I only hope that 2016 will keeps its evil death claws off of Glen Campbell, even though I know he’s really not there anymore. I just don’t want to have to say goodbye.

And now, on with the show.

  1. One more shot of whiskey gonna see me pass
Into the realm of pure imagination at last….

I don’t think many folks picked up on the Willy Wonka parody references in Hot Tuna’s great song “Bar Room Crystal Ball,” but I remember shaking orf my initial bedazzlement at Jorma’s solo which immediately preceded this one to think, “hey, that’s a Willy Wonka reference!”

This was a lot of years ago, of course, and my listening facilities were…ah…augmented, shall we say, but there it was.

Anyway, thanks much Prof for the tribute to another lost comic genius.
