Kia Tigers closer made a dangerous pick-off that almost hit the runner at second base

(Video of the incident.)

This is from Saturday (South Korea time), Doosan Bears vs Kia Tigers game at Gwangju champions field, home of the Tigers. In the top of the 9th, Kia Tigers closer Lim Chang-yong (also a former pitcher for the Chicago Cubs) unleashed a pick-off throw that almost hits Doosan Bears Oh Jae-won at second, no ejections were made in that inning, though warnings were made. Closer Lim stayed and closed out the game in a 5-3 Kia Tigers win over Doosan.

A couple of days later after this incident… just a while ago this afternoon, the KBO disciplinary committee issued a 3 game suspension with 120 hours of community service to Lim due to his “controversial” pick-off throw, effective immediately.

  1. Did he really do that on purpose? It’s kind of weird. He had all the time in the world to make the throw. Looking at the video his own team-mates didn’t really wise up to the pick off throw. He should just have kept the ball in his glove. Was he trying to throw the shortstop maybe?
