The Iron Giant and Marcell the Damned collided, hard, in right center field in the fourth inning at Gnats Field this afternoon, permitting Ryan Zimmerman to round the bases for an inside the park home run:
Both of the Feesh’s big guys stayed in the game. The Iron Giant got up pretty quickly – rumor has it that he was once hit by a cement mixer and got up pretty quickly – but poor Marcell sojourned in that twilit world between consciousness and a New Madrid jello mold for a few moments, as befitting someone who had just been slugged with an errant wrecking ball.
It was the only run El Keed permitted in an otherwise dominant seven inning stint during which he allowed only three other hits and struck out his usual eleven flailing Gnats. He also drove in a pair of runs with a single in the sixth, and we all know how much more he loves to hit than to pitch anyway. El Keed has seemed much more his old, mythopoetically waterlogged self again and his performance earned the Rainbow Warriors a split of the four game series. The Iron Giant proved that he was OK two innings later when he crushed an admittedly ordinary opposite field dinger into the Gnats’ boolpen. Marcell the Damned also singled and scored in the sixth ahead of J T Realmutant on El Keed’s single, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.
As of this writing the Feesh sit at 20-17 in fourth, just behind the Mutts who lost their fourth straight today, and the Feelies, who they play for three games beginning tomorrow in Feeladelfia. The strange attractor has become pretty supple over the past week and change during which the Feesh have gone 6-4. It has been a confusing week for the attractor, which must feel like it’s been standing on the corner of Bleeker and McDougal wondering which way to go. Apparently though, it has at least learned how to fasten onto the boolpen with its gossamer reality waves:
