Red Sox starting pitcher exited the game last night after just four batters and will be placed on the 15 day DL with a right shoulder “impingement” whatever the hell that means. I think it’s code for “we either don’t know, or don’t want to say”. A timetable for Kelly has yet to be determined. Kelly joins fellow Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez on the DL. In addition to losing Kelly, the bullpen had to work 9 1/3 innings last night, leaving Boston in a really tough position. Rodriguez is said to be nearing completion of his rehab however, so the Sox may only need a fill in starter for one or two starts.
A timetable on Kelly, or at least further details on the matter, should be available in the coming days, but Scott Lauber of ESPN Boston tweets some potential context for the ailment, noting that Kelly’s teammate, Travis Shaw, tells him that he went more than four weeks without even throwing a ball upon being diagnosed with an impingement in his own right shoulder last October. Of course, it’s entirely possible that Kelly will face a shorter layoff from throwing, but Farrell did concede that it “looks like he’s going to miss some time,” Britton tweets.
See the injury below. (No worries, it’s not cringeworty or anything.)
Impingement, IIRC, was the term used for Michael Wacha.
And, how’s Joe Kelly gonna win that Cy Young when he’s on the DL?
