New Rakuten Eagles addition, Jonny Gomes blast first NPB season homerun in Japan

(Jonny Gomes first career NPB regular season homerun.)

New Rakuten Eagles addition, Jonny Gomes (35 years old), just blasted his first NPB regular season homerun yesterday here at Kyocera Dome, home of the Orix Buffaloes. Facing against Buffaloes starter, Daiki Tomei here at the top of the 4th inning, Gomes send a Tomei 140 kph fastball deep to the left field stands (on a 3-2 count, with one out), giving the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead in the 4th, Jonny Gomes finished the game going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s (via RBI walk in the 5th inning and solo homerun), the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles went on to win the game 5-2.

So far in the current ongoing season, Jonny Gomes is batting .243/.378/.349 in 10 games played (47 at-bats)… now with one homerun in his belt and 7 RBI’s, 9 hits (2 doubles), along with 5 walks and 9 strikeouts.

Jonny Gomes signed a one year deal worth 225 million Yen with added incentives (worth 112,598,000 yen) with the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles just this February. The 13-year Major league veteran hit 162 homeruns while playing for 8 different teams in the MLB… Masataka Nashida, manager of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, is hoping to see Gomes’ power numbers translate well in the NPB this season.

  1. Wouldn’t it be great if he threatened to break the record for homers? Only in the NPB can you legitimately say you are making 9 digits on a one year contract? I so want to make 5 digits as a sous chef! I’m pretty sure I could live on 20 grand a decade. The experience would be worth it. Cheers

  2. Oh, by the way…my Yelp ratings would be WAY better than 243/378/349 because I hit home runs when I cook baby….but I sometimes whiff so the batting average would be like 950 but I’m guessing that I would destroy the obp because I am surrounded by really good cooks so I imagine I am in the 975 range and I already said that I hit a lot of homers so that brings me to 990!

Watch me burn everything tomorrow for my hubris, but fuck it, today was better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today and by this time next week they may give me the restaurant….who knows?

To quote an Oscar winner…..” So you’re saying that there is a chance?”
