(Must watch video, Jones’ first NPB regular season homerun.)
New Yomiuri Giants acquisition, Garrett Jones (34 years old), just blasted his first NPB regular season homerun (a 2-run homerun) just this week… off Tokyo Yakult Swallows reliever pitcher Akiyoshi Ryo in the bottom of the 8th inning at the Tokyo Dome. Not only does Jones blasted his very first homer in his NPB career, he also made it in style, CLUTCH style, giving the Giants a 3-2 lead in the late innings, sealing the victory via clutch homer in front of their home fans. So far in the current NPB season, Garrett Jones is hitting .313/.875/.450 in 5 games (16 AB’s)… and has 3 homeruns under his belt so far in the season (here, you can see Jones’ second and third homerun, both were against the Yokohama DENA Baystars series this week). The league’s opening day started at March 25.
Garrett Jones signed a one year deal worth an estimated 300 million Yen (2.5 million USD) with the Yomiuri Giants last December 16, 2015… Playing in approximately 911 Major league games throughout his career with 4 different teams in the MLB, he hit 122 homeruns and 400 RBI’s along with a batting average of .251 in that span, he can hit for power… One of the reasons why Yomiuri signed him in the off-season. With Shinnosuke Abe penciled as the primary first baseman for the Giants this upcoming season, Garrett Jones will primarily be used as a right fielder this year. Jones is playing in the Central League where there is NO DH rule.
