Big NPB off-season additions, Dayan Viciedo and Garrett Jones first preseason homeruns in Japan

(Must watch video, Dayan Viciedo’s first preseason homerun.)

New big signee addition, Dayan Viciedo (now 27 years old) of the Chunichi Dragons, just hit his first preseason homerun (solo shot) in Japan just this week, off reliever Singo Takeshita of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in the 9th inning… Prior to hitting his first preseason homerun in Japan, Dayan Viciedo was just 2 for 16 with only one RBI at the plate, here’s hoping he can wrap things up a bit with that first homerun of his and perform well this preseason and for the upcoming 2016 NPB regular season.

Dayan Viciedo signed a one year deal worth 170 million yen (1.4 million USD) last December with Chunichi. The 185 cm, 105 kg Cuban slugger, Dayan Viciedo, hit 66 homeruns in 483 Major league games with the Chicago White Sox (2010-2014). Playing in the Central League where there’s NO DH rule, Viciedo will primarily be used there at first base with the departure of Hector Luna, while also seeing some playing time there in the outfield or maybe 3rd.

(Must watch video, Garrett Jones’ first preseason homerun in Japan.)

New big signee addition of the Yomiuri Giants, Garrett Jones (34 years old), hit his very first preseason homerun (3-run shot to dead central) in Japan last week, off starting pitcher Anthony Bass’ fastball (145 kph, his 9th pitch of the game) of the Hokaido Nippon-Ham Fighters… Giving Jones his new team a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning… Garrett Jones is currently 8 for 20 in this preseason, hitting 1 homerun and 5 RBI’s in just his 8th game.

Garrett Jones signed a one year deal worth an estimated 300 million Yen (2.5 million USD) with the Yomiuri Giants last December 16, 2015… Playing in approximately 911 Major league games throughout his career with 4 different teams in the MLB, he hit 122 homeruns and 400 RBI’s along with a batting average of .251 in that span, he can hit for power… One of the reasons why Yomiuri signed him in the off-season. With Shinnosuke Abe penciled as the primary first baseman for the Giants this upcoming season, Garrett Jones will primarily be used as a right fielder this year. Jones is also playing in the Central League where there is NO DH rule.

Big acquisitions coming from the MLB (hitters)… Garrett Jones, Dayan Viciedo and Jonny Gomes, all 3 players hit their first preseason homeruns in Japan in just their first week of exhibition.
