(VIDEO UPDATE: Oh Seung-hwan’s bullpen session.)
Update just today: This very news video (Via TVchanews), says it all… Oh Seung-hwan’s changeup is the best in the business baby, Eric Fryer (Oh’s bullpen catcher that day) and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny were damn impressed.
New Cardinals acquisition, set-up pitcher Oh Seung-hwan looked sharp in his first bullpen session here at Roger Dean stadium in Jupiter, Florida… Regarding about the pitches he had thrown (two-seamers and a bunch of breaking ball variety)… it was Oh’s changeup… that has received the most (positive) attention by media outlets here, especially by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He threw all his changeups to where the bullpen catcher wants it, showing precise accuracy when using the pitch.
As you can in the video above, there’s a somewhat “unique” delivery in Oh’s pitching…(which was kinda bit of an issue, small issue, during a match against LG back in their practice game in Japan last 2014, when Oh was first signed by the Hanshin Tigers… It’s all history now though, it turns out the left foot only “seemed” to drag along the ground as he makes the pitch). Still, all in all… the pitching coaches were all very impressed and satisfied in Oh’s first bullpen session.
Oh Seung-hwan left the country back in February 10 (South Korea time), to join the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, Florida. Oh, who signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals (with a team option) on Jan. 11, has been dominant as a closer in both South Korea and Japan. He’s the all-time saves leader in the KBO, with the Samsung Lions… with 277 saves under his belt in nine seasons in Korea, and picked up 80 saves over the past two years with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan’s NPB.
