Hisashi Iwakuma was poised to become a Dodger, but then reports early this morning were that the veteran pitcher failed the needed physical to complete the contract. All afternoon, baseball twitter was held in limbo waiting for more information regarding Iwakuma’s next move.
The wait is over.
And Mariners fans (and players) are welcoming Kuma back with open arms:
It’s a one year contract with vesting options for the next two years.
Is it just me, or does it seem like the Dodgers haven’t been able to do anything right this entire orfseason?

They just haven’t spent like drunken sailors.
One could convincingly argue that:
1) NOT paying Greinke $34M+/year for his age 32-37 seasons is doing something right.
2) NOT paying Cueto $23 each of the next 2 years and committing over $20M+ if he breaks for the 4 years after that is doing something right.
3) NOT paying Iwakuma $15M/year for his age 35-37 seasons is doing something right. Iwakuma has been healthy for an entire year just once since coming to MLB.
They are still a good team and have built a solid farm system with quality high-end prospects that are close to the majors.
Long-term deals for top end FAs are super fun when your team signs a highly sought after talent….but let’s remember, almost every one of those deals ends badly, and many of them start badly as well.

Oh, you’re just trying to rationalize on Heyward.

No rationalization needed. Feel free to list all of the long term deals to guys over 30 that have worked out. I can probably list about 10 deals that didn’t for each one that wasn’t somewhere between bad and a disaster.

Also, Heyward is only 26. The long-term issue is usually due to paying for almost exclusively decline years…with Heyward, you still get 4 years of prime age before you have to worry about age-related decline.

I’m never going to argue these things with you because we do not agree on what the end goals are.

2016 will be interesting for the Dollars. Will Puig continue to mature, or will he (per Greinke’s “clubhouse” comment) not do so. Will Joc show more progression?

I love Joc Pederson. Love him. I know he’s got maturing to do, and he needs to work on plate patience, but I love watching that kid play. He’s a joy.
