Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman allegedly fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami-area home following an October argument with his girlfriend in which she told police he “choked” her and pushed her against a wall, according to police reports obtained by Yahoo Sports.
“I’ve reviewed the facts as portrayed,” Jay Reisinger, Chapman’s attorney, told Yahoo Sports on Monday night. “On behalf of Mr. Chapman, we vehemently deny the allegations as stated. Beyond that, we have no further comment at this time.”
Chapman admitted to firing the shots, seven of which landed in a concrete wall, and one of which went through a window. Police decided not to file charges due to conflicting reports and uncooperative witnesses. Police interviewed several witnesses including Chapman, his girlfriend, her brother, and his driver.
The incident started, Chapman’s girlfriend told police, after she went into a bathroom of Chapman’s 10,000-square-foot-plus house and “found something in his phone that she did not like,” according to the report. Chapman, his girlfriend told police, then took the phone from her, the report said. They went to the movie theater inside of Chapman’s home, where “he had pushed her against the wall,” according to the report, and “that Chapman had ‘choked’ her by placing his hands around her neck, but did not prevent her from breathing at any time.” Police did not observe “injuries or even redness anywhere on her neck or chest,” the report said.
Although police decided not to press charges, MLB still intends to investigate the incident on their own.
In Chapman’s version of the story, he told police he used his index and middle fingers and “poked his girlfriend on the left shoulder and told her not to talk to him like that,” according to the report. He said his girlfriend fell to floor and started yelling, the report said. Chapman told police the girlfriend’s brother came into the room and pushed Chapman to the ground, according to the report. Friends and family, Chapman told police, separated the two so they wouldn’t fight, the report said.

It would appear that word of this incident is what held up the trade to the Dodgers. It would also explain part of why Cincinnati was so willing to let go of Chapman quickly and cheaply.

TBH, had they came five minutes earlier, there is a 90% chance that Chapman would have had at least 25 freedom holes in him!

When today’s mass shooting occurs, it is quite probable that a couple good guys with guns are going to shoot other good guys with guns…..

Bin Laden is a tiny bit different than being trained for combat and having that target shooting back. I will go so far as to state that there will more collateral damage than the actual event itself because of the 15 missed shots from the 16 bullet magazine! I really hope I am wrong but I’m certain that I’m right sadly.

Ok, here’s what I don’t get from this whole thing. Why, if this happened in October, is it just being “reported” now? Why weren’t the Reds and MLB made aware of this when it happened?
This happened in Miami. The cops don’t have a reputation for reasonable restraint down there. There were, apparently, 12 of them responding to the DV call.

What I loved was that the noise complaint says it was “cleared by arrest” but the alleged violence call was not. This is one of the reasons I’m really unsettled about having employers (NFL, MLB) handle these issues. It’s a cop out that allows our justice system to continue to fail on these matters. I’d rather have justice than employment actions. It’s not like this is the first time he’s been involved in a strange incident involving women. You know, where there’s smoke… I could do better interviews than the reports indicate the cops did here.

Not entirely sure what else they (police) could have done. But I know that if the (unnamed) girlfriend was a relative of mine, there would have been some serious conversations about her removing herself from his presence, at least.

As I said, if you read the reports, the cops did a crap job of interviewing the witnesses and evaluating the testimony. Clearly, they valued the unsworn statement of Chapman’s male driver over that of his gf — and if there were 20 people at the house, why did they only take 4 witness statements (2 of which said Chapman did nothing and 2 that said he did). The police there obviously weren’t too interested in making sure that kind of thing isn’t tolerated in their jurisdiction.

Yeah….if some one is so pissed that they let loose 8 shots at the wall….that person should at least go to jail for a cooling off period and all guns should be confiscated as a precautionary measure….to be possibly retrieved after some counseling. WTF are they waiting for…the guy to kill someone?

A few impressions…
Police officers do get training in domestic disputes, but they need some legal backup. No one should be allowed to fire a weapon (there were 20 people there? WTF)through a window and not be arrested, but apparently that isn’t a law. Only in FLA or is it true elsewhere?
“serve and protect” or whatever slogan the PD use, separation of the parties should become a standard of domestic situations. Take Chapman down to the station to get his statement.
Our old pal Dusty Baker, who is privy to the same televised facts we are, has pronounced that “He is a heck of a guy.” ‘Nuff said.

Exactly. He’s a danger to himself too, if he’s mad and shooting guns in an enclosed place. And, what about giving him a sobriety test just to be on the safe side. I’ve seen police find reasons to drag out interactions with motorists and protesters longer than this.
