The Mariners will be sending Mark Trumbo and a yet to be identified player to Baltimore in exchange for Catcher Steve Clevenger. Trumbo could be an option at First Base if they are unable to retain the services of Chris Davis. If Davis does return, he can fit in at Left Field and Designated Hitter. Trumbo is projected to make 9.1mil this season after arbitration and figured to cost more money than Seattle was looking to spend.
Trumbo averaged 32 homers per season from 2011-13 with the Angels and D-backs, but injuries slowed him in 2014, and his power output declined a bit in 2015. In total, he’s a career .250/.300/.458 hitter with 30-homer power that is coming off a .262/.319/.449 season split between Arizona and Seattle.
Clevenger is a contact hitting catcher who has never shown much power. He was out of options and with the return of Matt Wieters to Baltimore, figured to be the odd man out.
I really liked Clevenger, and will be sad to see him go. I guess Trumbo is a boost to the offense, but seems more like an insurance policy against Chris Davis leaving.

Doesn’t seem like an insurance policy at all. Seems more like a signed confession that Davis isn’t coming back.

I expected he was gone anyways, but I don’t think this necessarily means he’s gone. They still need an outfielder and a DH.

Yea, Cherington made a pretty good move here.

With this deal, the Orioles have now cut ties with both Clevenger and Scott Feldman, meaning they no longer have anyone left from their end of the Arrieta/Strop trade.
I think now it can be safely and officially called — the Orioles did not come away with the better side of that trade.

Not sure whats up with this, the M’s now have 3 MLB catchers on their roster. Maybe sending Zunino to the minors? Very odd.

Zunino seems broken. He needs a change of scenery, whether via trade or via turnover in coaching and development staff. His approach at the plate isn’t horrible, but his contact rates are really bad both in and out of the zone. He’s Arencibia without the power right now.

I agree his development has been slower than hoped. However he is still very young.
